Mad Monster Expo 2022: A Mutilated Commentary

This past weekend Mutilated Mohawk Media traveled to Mad Monster Expo 2022 in Concord, NC. There were laughs, cries, and a whole lot of partying. Overall, I think that the Mad Monster Expo was a major success for Mutilated Mohawk Media for a few key reasons. Lots of big things have been set in the motions, and for you folks who have been here from the start I am happy for you guys to see some of the really cool things that we are working on at the Mutilated Mohawk Manor of Horror.

I will say from the top that this article isn’t sponsored by anybody; meaning all the people I mention are in here at my own regard. There were some key people that made this convention as glorious as it was, and deserve a part in my recounting of the legendary tales that was Mad Monster Expo. Throughout this article I do have to keep some details under wraps, as revealing said details will give unwanted insights into further content that I am planning on putting out. So, if some sections sound a bit vague or empty just cut me a little bit of slack, I promise there is some cool stuff coming out in the future.

Friday night opens with some absolutely wild events. In many regards, this was one of the few cons that felt like Friday partied harder than Saturday. I think everyone in my crew went way harder on the sauce Friday. One of our companions, a Mad Monster legend who shall not be named, partied a little too hard Friday night and was tapped out almost the entire day Saturday.

The convention itself was amazing. This year had a wide variety of really cool vendors and actors. They even had the Dragula car from the Munster’s out in the middle of the convention floor. There were live snakes and a live monkey at the convention. Tons of horror memorabilia, merch, and even some amazing celebrity guests. It was really cool meeting Tom Atkins and Stacy Nelkin for the Halloween III Season of The Witch gathering. Tom Atkins, just like about every other celebrity at this convention, was genuinely a nice guy. This was really nice because I’ve been to a few conventions where a few of the actors were more money hungry assholes and it was obvious.

The large groups of celebrities from both the Killer Klowns From Outer Space movie and E.T The Extra Terrestrial were very cool as well. Henry Thomas Jr and Robert MacNaughton were both genuinely amazing people to talk to. It makes a world of difference at these conventions when the actors that you are excited to meet turn out to be very genuine and sweet people.

I will say that Friday was the start of some cool things for the Mutilated Mohawk brand. First and foremost we got to catch legendary horror author and punk rock maniac John Wayne Comunale for an interview that will be coming out this Friday. He’s always a huge source of inspiration and we are insanely grateful for the interview. Would you believe me if I told you that was only the start of the shenanigans.

I can not go into more detail about Friday night without legal trouble. Let your imagination run wild. However, it was one of the most wild parties that happened at Mad Monster. We stayed up until the hours and roamed the corridors of the Embassy Suites at Concord.

Saturday came and went. A lot of people in the Mutilated Crew were a little worn out and didn’t go as hard Saturday, however, it was very productive. I think the overwhelming theme for the weekend was the amazing contacts I made. I mean I was able to pitch some of my future ideas and projects to horror directors, established authors, and other influential people in the scene. Getting genuine feedback from them meant the absolute world to me and the future of this site.

Another amazing piece of the convention was the costume contest. I know I’m among the popular majority when I say that having the amazing horror director James Balsamo host the costume contest was an absolute win for Mad Monster. I’ve been to many Mad Monster’s and never have the costume contests felt more alive than this one. I think that is one-hundred percent to do with the fact that they had him host it. He was up there yelling and getting the crowd riled up. He would scream and cheer and get the whole place on their feet. That costume contest was genuinely amazing, and in the off chance that someone from the Mad Monster higher ups sees this, please please PLEASE make him a regular host at the costume contests.

The classes at this expo provided anyone interested with an insane amount of knowledge on the topics at hand. I went to a few of them and I can say that they were worth the price of admission alone. Sitting in a small room with people who have made it in these industries was invaluable. To be able to ask established people personalized questions about your own projects is crazy useful, especially when you are running your own horror blog from the corner room of a humble abode.

The scaryoke and RIP party were pretty wild. Some people went all in for their karaoke songs, and there was even some kid who was absolutely busting a move on the dancefloor. Dude’s probably going to be a rockstar one day. Overall it was genuinely really so much calmer than Friday night was. This might just be my perception of it all, but it definitely felt smoother. It was nice though, sitting at the bar with Mrs. Mutilated Mohawk while people sang their drunken hearts out. It was a good peak to the weekend, mellow but fulfilling.

Sunday was the most productive day by far. I have to thank three people for directly influencing the sheer amount of work I got done that day. John Wayne Comunale, Kristopher Rufty, and James Balsamo were literally the most inspirational people that day as they drove me to reach new heights on certain projects. We also got some crazy cool interviews done for you guys that I really think you are going to enjoy. Over the next few months we will try to drop these interviews on Friday’s and keep Tuesdays reserved for more free-form style articles.

Overall I met so many creative individuals at Mad Monster. From the amazing cosplays, to the wonderful vendors, and to top it off some genuinely sweethearts of celebrities. Mad Monster in Concord is my home convention, and it never ceases to disappoint me. Every single year for both the Party and the Expo it is an absolute ball of a time. As I type this out I genuinely miss it all, but I am so excited for the next Mad Monster Party in February.
