Mutilated Mohawk Media takes on the daunting task of ranking all of the Friday the 13th movie. I think that this is one of those franchises where people really cling to certain movies and fans are divided. So Mutilated Mohawk is going to take a swing at ranking every single movie, and giving a brief description as to why we put it into certain places. Read through our list and if you have any comments or questions feel free to use the contact us page to send us a message.
The first F13 is B tier, and oh boy we are already off to a great start. I put it here because it is a prequel film. Every horror fan needs to watch this movie to get some of the lore down, a little bit of backstory, but the series main antagonist isn’t in this. Maybe you can count that final scene, but Jason as he is later realized won’t come around till the second. It’s not a horrible watch, but it’s definitely not going to be my go-to watch when I am thinking about the series. I feel very neutral about this film. I know that most people love this one because it is the original, I do feel very strongly that F13 is one of the few franchises where the sequels top the original tenfold
Friday The 13th Part 2, our second entry into the franchise and I have put it on the A tier. Once again I know this is gonna hit a nerve with some people, but let me explain. This is not only our first entry with Jason Voorhees as the killer, it’s one of the more unique entries as Jason is a burlap sack wearing hillbilly. I find this so unique. This was also my first Friday the 13th film I ever saw, which was confusing when I finally saw the killer because I wanted to see our Hockey Masked Hero and I got the backwoods murderer. Still a great watch and I very much enjoy rewatching this one from time to time. Solid kills and a very memorable film for me personally.
This one gets a C tier, and that’s only because of the kickass bikers. They are quite honestly the only solid thing about this film. Sure, Jason gets his iconic hockey mask in this one, but other than that this film is just forgettable to me. I’ve watched it once, and I don’t think I’ll be going back to it for a long time. Compared to all the other films in the franchise this one is mediocre at best.
The 4th installment is an absolute S tier for me. Not only are there some ruthless kills in this one, but we also get Corey Feldman. This is usually my go to when introducing people to the franchise. It was a wonderful story and a pretty kickass ending. The kills are phenomenal and we truly get an amazing Friday the 13th movie. The story of Tommy Jarvis spans over three movies with this being the first in that trilogy, and I’m here for every single one of them.
I absolutely love part 5, which I already know is going to get a lot of hate. This movie has some genuinely great kills. I know most hardcore F13 fans despise this movie because it doesn’t actually have Jason Voorhees as the killer, but I think that it being Roy instead of Jason, when he died in the last movie, makes it kinda kickass. This film is also slammed full with interesting side characters that add so much flavor to this entry. We have characters like Ethel, Demon, and Reggie that really just add so much to this film. From the diner scene to the greaser’s who broke down on the side of the road this movie is just fun. It’s packed full of zany characters that just make this entry unique.
The final entry in the Tommy Jarvis trilogy is another home run for me. In fact, in my opinion, the Tommy Jarvis trilogy is some of the best this franchise has to offer, and this is the cherry on top of it. While Part 5 gave us a surprise twist with Roy Burns being a Jason impersonator, Part 6 gives us a Jason film like no other. Jason comes back to life and kicks more ass than ever. I mean, some of these kills actually show us some pretty well done gore, which is a change from the red pait style blood from the previous entries.
The seventh film is an absolutely insane attempt at a Friday film. It’s not the worst, by far, but following Part 6 this film just can’t stand. As I said, this isn’t the worst film in the franchise, that’ll come later. I will say this film does get points because it’s the first entry with Kane Hodder taking the role of Jason. Although CJ Graham was phenomenal playing the role, I think it is universally accepted that Kane Hodder did amazing things with the role. While the psychic thing seems like a cool idea, it just doesn’t feel right for a Friday film. I will still admit that there . On top of all of that the kills are so tamed down in this film, and after further research it was due to the MPAA absolutely ravaging the gore scenes in this one. It’s unfortunate. Overall, I don’t mind this film, its one to watch every few years, but this isn’t usually my go to.
This is a film I so desperately wanted to love. I was so stoked to see a Jason film in the big city, and the big city seemed to be shot in a toxic almost Taxi Driver style version of New York. Conceptually, the idea was so appealing to me. However, when you watch this movie it is so much less than that. Sure, there are some great scenes shot in the big city, some are iconic for the franchise as a whole. However, getting to that part of the movie means sitting through the never ending cruise scene that just feels like a drag. Kane Hodder does return as Jason, and he does a brilliant job. I do think the most interesting character in this movie is J.J. who dies so early on that we don’t get enough of that heavy metal badassery. I will admit that Julius boxing Jason is absolutely legendary. Other than those scenes and a few comedic scenes in New York, this film has a lot of long drawn out scenes that are kind of dull. However, I do think it is more enjoyable to watch than the first film and the seventh film. Even with the long drawn out scenes, and the whole ordeal with the cruise this film still packs a punch.
This is my least favorite film in the franchise for a few different reasons. First, Jason being some sort of parasite that travels through people’s mouths and possesses them is absolutely insane. I was so excited to watch this movie in the opening scenes because it was the classic Jason chasing a final girl and gets ambushed by a team of people. The fact that they actually killed him in this one by blowing him up had me excited for what was to come, and then they just turned it into a weird possession thing. When the coroner just was enticed to eat Jason’s heart and became possessed I lost interest completely. At that point just make a movie without the Friday The 13th as the title because this thing was absolutely . That was worse of a ‘creative original twist’ than the whole psychic thing that part 7 tried to do. This was definitely a one time watch for me because the whole plot was just ruined with that sentiment. Creighton Duke is about the only interesting thing in this film. Even the stupid family relation plot that they try to push does absolutely nothing in the film. This is the ninth installment to the franchise, if family was even a remote thing considered it should have been established much earlier.
Part 10 is, well, not the greatest. I do rank it above Part 9 because I find the concept hilarious. It’s still a shitty movie, but it is still more enjoyable than part 9. There is not much else to say for this entry other than holy shit that face freeze death is absolutely kickass.
Freddy Versus Jason is another one of my favorites, however I didn’t put it at S tier only because the director fucked up in casting. Kane Hodder campaigned for this movie and to absolutely block him out from playing this role is horrendous. That just demotes it a tier. I feel that the director made a few key bad decisions in this film, but that was the major one that really sets it back for me. Other than that I do enjoy watching this film. I really wish they could figure out licensing issues and do more horror icons versus other horror icons because I absolutely love films like this. Of course, if they tried to do this in the modern era I almost could guarantee that the slashers would do that god awful trope of ‘they team up in the middle and join forces to fight a greater threat.’ That is another thing I genuinely enjoyed about this movie, it had a clear cut winner. Jason clearly wins. Now, Freddy is still alive which gives it sequel potential, but the fact that their is a clear winner gives major points in my mind.
This is one of those movies that I just glossed over. It’s not the greatest at all, but in my opinion I’d rather sit through the shitty acting in this than watch Jason Goes To Hell anyday.
