The legendary horror punk trio known as Calabrese has released their latest EP, Death Cult. This highly anticipated release from the horror collective flew on the radars of Mutilated Mohawk after the huge promotion of the track Be My Death Cult and was a must for an EP that we had to review. Does this latest release stand up to this titan of horror punks previous work, or is this just cannon fodder that is added to their catalog?
Mutilated Review
The first thing in this review is going to be the album artwork. The orange background and purple chick in lingerie. It gives me really heavy fall vibes, and in the blistering heat of the summer makes me feel nostalgic for that holy autumn time of the year. Especially with the horror seasons soon to arrive I feel that this album cover really gives us a perfect snack to hold us through the rest of the summer months. It isn’t an premature overdose on the horror season, for that will come soon enough, this is just a succulent dive into what is to come. Its simplicity is its success. It stays consistent with the same style of illustration that their previous album artworks have demonstrated.
The EP opens up with Be My Death Cult and holy shit, what an opening. The track is everything we wanted from all the promotional videos that the band was releasing on their socials. It is exactly what we wanted, a super catchy horror punk song. Everything was perfect in this song, and I think it was the anticipation of this track in particular that had it as a perfect opening for the album.
The next track God Kills… And So Shall We is another instant classic. The absolutely wicked melody of the vocals in this just gives the same spooky time vibes that the cover gives you. The song is super catchy and they did an absolutely amazing job writing a chorus and hook that really pops. I think for this EP they did a fantastic job of writing great vocal melodies that are catchy. The way they have the relatively simple drum work behind a catchy melody really drives this home as an instant classic.
There Is No Heaven (Only Hell) is the third track and follows a similar structure as the previous track. I will say this track is not as memorable as the previous one, and maybe it is because they sound very similar. The riffs and drum beats feel the same in both of these. However, this is not a bad song by any means.
Evil Darkness is the final track on this EP. The atmospheric intro brings me to an almost black metal state of mind. Then the drums pick up and we are in another horror punk throwdown with the Calabrese brothers. This track has very heavy hitting vocals and is the cherry on top of this wonderful EP.
Overall, I am insanely happy with this release. It is everything I wanted from a kickass band. For those who enjoy the punk sounds of the Misfits or similar acts, you will find a home with Calabrese. Also their instagram page is absolutely phenomenal and filled with content. They are truly a horror punk band carrying the scene. As for Be My Death Cult, we here at Mutilated Mohawk Media believe this piece holds its own. It’s not something to just glaze over if you want to stay up to date with modern horror punk!
